Jorge Pérez Rodríguez is an artist born in La Laguna (Tenerife, Canary Islands), where he currently resides.
He studied Graphic Design for four years at the Fernando Estévez School of Art and obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts in La Laguna. Although, as he says, "I have acquired most of my training at my own studio via researching and practical innovating in traditional techniques."
Jorge says: "I am going to define myself as I am being defined out in the world... hyperrealist. Let's say it is a fantasy work, that tends towards realism."
Jorge is currently showing at VivaQi Gallery a body of works called Borondon.
In Jorge Perez Rodriguez paintings from this series the lines dividing visible/invisible & above/below can reflect our conscious and unconscious states, at times merging, disappearing, appearing in different locations.
The result is a mixture of surrealistic stories and abstract style depicted in oil techniques on paper and canvas. His paintings are available as originals and limited edition prints.
The Borondon* myth refers to a legendary tale from the Canary Islands. It is a story of a mysterious island that supposedly appears and disappears from view, often described as a place of paradise or an earthly utopia.
*Borondon Myth
1. Mysterious Island: Borondon is often depicted as a beautiful, lush island that can be seen from the shores of Canary Islands, particularly La Palma, but cannot be reached. It is said to be visible under certain conditions, sometimes shrouded in mist or clouds.
2. Protagonists: The myth typically features sailors or fishermen who spot the island and attempt to reach it. However, they often find that it eludes them, leading to various interpretations about its existence.
3. Symbolism: Borondon is often seen as a symbol of unattainable dreams or desires. It represents a place of beauty and tranquility that one can see but never fully access, echoing themes of longing and the pursuit of the ideal.
4. Cultural Impact: The legend of Borondon has permeated local culture and folklore, inspiring stories, art, and even music. It reflects the rich oral traditions of the Canary Islands and the fascination with the sea and the unknown.
5. Historical Context: Over the years, the myth has been linked to various historical explorations and maritime legends, sometimes associated with the search for lost lands or treasures.
The Borondon myth continues to be a significant part of the cultural heritage of the Canary Islands, encapsulating the allure of the ocean and the mysteries that lie just beyond the horizon.
